Leighton, Caroline

Background

Caroline started her soccer career in the Washington, DC area, where she played in a league that was made up of a majority of male athletes. After moving with her family to the Bloomington-Normal area at the age of 9, Caroline played one season in a recreation-level soccer league before joining the Bloomington Normal Soccer Club.  When numbers in that club started diminishing, she joined a team with the Springfield Area Soccer Association.  During her high school career at Normal Community, Caroline was named to the All-Intercity, All-Conference, and All-Sectional teams, as well as her team's captain and MVP.

Caroline played collegiately at Illinois Wesleyan University, where she holds the record for most games played in a career and led her team to its first ever conference championship her senior year.  Caroline was also All-Conference all four years, captain her junior and senior years, and All-Region her senior year.  During her junior and senior years, Caroline started her coaching career with the Illinois Fusion Soccer Club as the assistant and head coach of two different teams and Normal Community High School as an assistant coach.  Following graduation, she relocated to the Champaign-Urbana area to serve as a math teacher and soccer coach at Urbana High School.  Caroline is also a USSF Grade 8 Referee.
